Burlingame is on the San Francisco Peninsula, right outside San Mateo and about 20 miles from San Francisco. Like most of California, the weather is sunny, temperate, and mild with no snow to shovel in the winter. Homes in the area have large lots and many are within walking distance to the downtown area.
The McLaren Grove is on the National Register of Historic Places due to the historic Eucalyptus trees lining the streets. They date back to the late 1870s when John McLaren planted them to provide a windbreak.

Local Lifestyle
Burlingame is a small town with urban amenities. Surrounded by wooded hills and the coast, it feels rural and laid back. Being close to San Francisco, it too is a hub for technology companies and major corporate headquarters. Wells Fargo and AT&T both have corporate offices in the area. The locals refer to their downtown corridor as “The Ave,” short for Burlingame Avenue. It is a popular place for residents to shop, dine, and enjoy the many outdoor patios.
Dining, Entertainment & Shopping
Mingalaba is a Burmese and Mandarin restaurant with a range of sweet and spicy dishes. They have traditional favorites and specialties with fruit and vegetables used in surprising ways. The Rainbow Chicken is a mix of vegetables, mangoes, and pineapples and the Pumpkin Yellow chicken includes kabocha squash.
Sushi Sam’s is a wonderful Japanese sushi restaurant with over 25 signature dishes to choose from.
Tuna Kahuna was voted one of the best 100 places to eat by Yelp. They are famous for their poke bowls made with fresh produce and pickled in-house ingredients. One of their signature poke bowls is the Yazu Salmon with yuzu truffle sauce and radish microgreens; another is the Spicy Chili Garlic Bowl with hamachi, tuna, cured eggs, and jalapenos.
The
Burlingame Fresh Market is a fun Sunday morning event with live music, balloons for the kids, and local artisans along with fresh produce from local farmers and orchards. The
New England Lobster Market & Eatery started as a wholesale distributor for live Maine lobster in the late 1980s. When they added a food truck in 2002, the response was so great they opened a full restaurant within the year. Their homemade lobster corn chowder is comfort food at its finest.
The
Burlingame Public Library attracts famous speakers, such as Patricia Arquette and Ira Glass. They strive to highlight innovative and original voices for science, the arts, and technology. It is a hub of information with a mission to promote literacy and equity for the community.
Things to Do
The annual
Burlingame On the Avenue fills the street with artisans from all over the country. It’s an opportunity to support independent artists while taking home unique art or other decor items for your home. Live blues and jazz music provides vibrant music to enjoy while shopping or having a draft in the beer garden.
The Peninsula Museum of Art provides art shows and educational programs for children and adults year-round.
Kohl Mansion is a 100-year old home and a historic landmark. The sculptured grounds and backdrop of the Bay and Burlingame hills is a luxurious setting for weddings and special events. The interior is meticulously restored and comes alive with special lighting and floral arrangements. It is a premier event center in San Francisco.
CuriOdyssey Science Playground & Zoo is just eight minutes from Burlingame in San Mateo. They provide science experiments for kids, even some to try at home, such as how to make a nature map or a solar oven. They teach children how to create art from natural objects and how to look for animal tracks. Children can interact with turtles and porcupines and watch the fascinating river otter work and play.
Schools
The
Burlingame School District has seven schools in their public school system for grades Kindergarten through eighth grade. The San Mateo Union High School District, one of the best-rated districts in California, has four elementary schools and Burlingame’s High School.
